Instagram has 1 billion monthly users and counting. As a content strategist on Instagram's growth team, Whitney thought a lot about how to introduce people to the app, welcome them in, and get them started. This work covers many distinct moments, but all these separate experiences make up one big experience: getting to know Instagram. To make that introduction as seamless as possible, Whitney and a colleague developed a set of principles for designing onboarding experiences that balance clarity and excitement. These principles also changed how they think about their relationship with—and responsibilities to—new people on Instagram.
